A little History: The very first “Samish Island Art Show” in 1997 was the initiative of Karen Hadman and Mary Ann Warner. Mary Ann departed, Karen picked up the flag, and our vibrant S.I. artist community became actively involved. Someone, someday, will record this history for the Samish Island Archives, (Sue M.??)

The annual All-Island GARAGE SALE again was a big success, both in terms of moving stuff around from one garage to another, and the important socializing. We owe Amy Colvin a huge thank-you for her work organizing this event.
On the subject of thanks, Debbie Emerson again has taken on the maintenance of the lawn at the Community Hall. It looks fine.
What a great PARADE on the 4th! Thank you participants and spectators alike: it takes both to make it fun. Special thanks to Kris and Roger Goodan and their helpers for running the show at Fish Point, and appreciation of our unique Marching Band for lending its spirited perrormance! Thanks also to Dave and Vange Von Allmen for once again allowing the Parade to use their Fish Point property.
The SICC BOARD will meet Wednesday, July 16, 7:00 pm at the Community Center. All Island residents are welcome to attend.

You’ve gotten news of web access to the COMMUNITY COOPERATION BLOG, and this is its address: www.samishsaves.blogspot.com. Steve Hoffman has been working on a lot of ideas of how we can use a community blog to share rides, trips to town, tools and equipment, and some labor and services, all communicated a lot quicker than the monthly ads in the Shore Lines.

Come join the HIKING GROUP for some adventure and companionship! We meet each month on the 2nd Thursday, July 10th for this month. Meet at the Community Hall at 10 AM. We'll judge the weather and conditions, and decide where to head. Pack a lunch and hiking gear.
Looking ahead for August, how about tackling Sauk Mountain? The conditions should be good by then and the view outstanding. Mark August 14th on your calendar for a great alpine hike. Please call Marlene at 766-5093 if you have questions.

SAMISH SENIOR SINGLES will gather for a “brown bag” lunch at Myrna Judy’s beach home, 11457 Blue Heron Rd., on Friday, July 25th, 11 AM. Questions? 766-6853/757-0303

A FEW INCHES OF ESCAPE CORD CAN PUT MORE CRABS ON YOUR PLATE.
One lost crab pot can kill 75 Dungeness crabs each year if it is not equipped with escape cord (made of a biodegradable material like cotton). An estimated 372,000 crabs die in lost pots each year in the Northwest Straits. You can help fix this problem by securing your crab pot lids and escape panels with escape cord (120 thread count or less to be legal). WSU Beach Watchers is sharing free samples and you can receive one by contacting Catherine Davis (766-6705). For more information, visit www.escapecord.org, and for derelict gear, visit wdfw.wa.gov/fish/derelict/

---from a Grateful Islander:
We are lucky to live on Samish Island! Last month I called and received immediate response from our Island Fire Department Medics. I cannot say enough about their quick response, medical ability, and professional treatment. And It was such a good feeling to realize I knew all the faces, my friends. I plan to make a donation to our Fire Department.
Without their training and dedication, my surviving daughters would be making the contribution in my memory!

“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds floating across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.”
