FROM THE COUNCIL OF CAMPFIRE USA:

“GREAT NEWS ABOUT CAMP KIRBY--WE'RE WINNING!”
In 2003, the Nile Temple of Seattle sued the Samish Council of Campfire USA for ownership of Camp Kirby. The Nile put forth two "claims" or legal reasons why they should take over the Camp Kirby property. After trying unsuccessfully to convince several lawyers to take the case for no fee or a reduced fee, the Council hired an excellent attorney, Steven Adelstein, to defend the lawsuit. Recently one of the claims has been dismissed. The Samish Council is confident that the other claim will be dismissed this Fall. What this means to Samish Islanders is obvious. The Camp Kirby property will remain essentially as it is and the property will not be divided and sold for development. What this means to the children of this area is that they will continue to have a beautiful camp and dedicated staff available to them for learning about nature and how to be good citizens. Up to this point in 2008 more than 1200 children have visited Camp Kirby and attended week-long Summer camping, and shorter environmental and day camping sessions.

Paying attorney fees and legal expenses has been a great financial burden for the Council. We want to thank the Samish Islanders who have helped us pay the $30,400 in legal fees and expenses that have already been charged. Unfortunately, we expect substantial additional charges. Several generous people have committed to matching future contributions to the legal fund. There is one condition to these gifts: the Council must raise $25,000 in contributions first. Please consider donating to the legal fund to support generations of kids and preserve the beauty and character of Samish Island. You can send a check or money order to Samish Council of Campfire USA, 2217 Woburn Street, Bellingham, WA 98229-3829. Please enclose a note stating the donation is for the legal fund. With your help we can keep Camp Kirby for the kids. Please call Nancy Preg at 766-6916 if you have questions.

Skagit Valley College will offer two Warm Water Bodywork Basics class series at the S.I. Soothing Waters pool. The dates are September 23rd, 24th, 30th, and October 1st from 1:00 - 2:30 or 2:30 to 4:00. You may register for either one by calling the college at 416-7873.

A very special thank-you to Skip Halgren for going out of his way to come to my rescue and deal with a flat tire on my motor home
