Arts
The Arts Committee is responsible for two events on the Island: the Samish Island Arts Festival in July and the Holiday Arts Festival in November. Check with Karen Hadman or Janene Kenaston to see how to join the group.

Edgewater Garden Club
The purpose of the Garden Club is to stimulate the knowledge of gardening, aide in the protection of native trees, plants, and birds, and to encourage civic planting. Membership is open to any person interested in the club's purpose. Membership year is from June 1 to May 31. Info: Linda Larson, 766.6600. Garden Club Services & Projects include:

  • Design and make wreaths for the holiday season.
  • Encourage holiday mailbox decoration.
  • Maintain Samish Island sign and planter.
  • Promote a clean island.
  • Promote fund raisers as needed to maintain or replace the Samish Island Sign.
  • Produce and sell original design Note Cards.

Samish Senior Singles
Samish Senior Singles meet monthly, usually the fourth Friday of the month, in various people's homes, or at a nearby restaurant. Watch for announcements in the Shore Lines. The club is open to all single islanders in their golden years - if you're over 50 and single, you're already a member, so join us soon.

Hiking Group
The Samish Island Hiking Group meets at the community hall on the second Thursday of the month, at 10 a.m. Wear hiking boots, bring a lunch and let's enjoy the outdoors. Contact Marlene Swenson for more information.

Transportation "Committee"
Samish Island Transportation Group (classic cars, sports cars, electric cars, trucks, street-rods, motorcycles, bio-diesels, or other interesting modes of transportation are welcomed), meets occasionally for lunch and discussion. Info: Denny Organ, 766-4478.

Yoga Classes
Yoga Class meets Tuesdays at 10 - 11:30 at the Community of Christ Church. Come when you can and experience the benefits to body, mind and spirit, as well as the wonderful camaraderie of class participants. Be sure to wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring a pad or blanket. Info: Liz Bart, 766-8403.

Soothing Waters
This warm water exercise (called Watsu) is available on the island, at a private pool.
At times, Skagit Valley Classes are offered here. Contact Liz Bart for additional information, 766-8403, or visit http://www.soothingwaters.net/ .

Samish Island Playground
Skagit County Parks sponsors a small playground on the island for day use only. Rules are posted on the Skagit Parks Foundation web site.

Samish Island Choir
The Samish island choir gathers in November to rehearse and sing for the December Christmas program at the Samish Island Community of Christ Church. More information: Lois Yale

Samish Island Marching Band
The band plays three times a year, once for the Burlington Berry Dairy Days Parade (June), once for the Samish Island Fourth of July Parade (July), and once for the Island Christmas Program (December). If you've ever played a band instrument, you are invited to join the group.

Local Movies
Local movies at various cinemas in Burlington, Mt. Vernon and Bellingham, are linked from the right margin on this page.

Book Groups
Several book groups meet on Samish Island. Each group meets in people's homes, so the membership limit is generally around 12 people. The Samish Island Book Group is Hadmans-Bluhms-McIntosh-Andersen-Studebaker-Huckleberry-Gaughan. Samish-Bayview Book Group is Nancy Liggett & others on and off the island.

Libraries
Because there is no county-wide library system in Skagit County, Samish Islanders, and all county residents not residing in Skagit county cities with public libraries, must pay non-resident user fees in order to borrow books from any of the county's public libraries.
