Waste, Garbage: All homes on the island have septic systems, which Skagit County requires regular maintenance and inspections. This annual or regular service should be figured into the household budget. Garbage and recycling services are available on the island through Waste Management, Inc.

Energy: Electric service is through Puget Sound Energy. Propane is available from various suppliers in Skagit County. There is no natural gas service. Solar power is of growing interest to islanders.

Schools: Students on the island attend the Burlington-Edison School District. Elementary students to Edison Elementary K-8 and high school students to Burlington Edison High School.

Hospitals: Samish Island is in hospital district #304, served by United General Hospital in Sedro-Woolley. Two other hospitals are also located in Skagit County - Skagit Valley Hospital, and Island Hospital in Anacortes. You are not limited to a particular hospital.

Transportation: Skagit Transit or SKAT, is available only from Edison. For occasional neighborly requests, say a ride to town, you can post a message on the Samish Neigbors email group "is anyone going to _ tomorrow?" There is no longer handicapped transport from the island to town via Skagit Transit. Care-E-Me and other non-emergency medical transport is available.

Library: Samish Island does not belong to any library district, like most of rural Skagit County. There is no county-wide library system like many counties provide. Residents of the island who wish to use library services must pay "non-resident user fees" to borrow from nearby libraries. Check these links to libraries.

The good news is that we have a Little Free Library on the island, located at the corner of Roney and Halloran Rd. Bring a book, take a book, everything is free. No checkouts, return later or contribute another title.

Boat Launches: There are no public boat launches on Samish Island. The nearest public boat launch is at Bayview, with others located at the Swinomish Boat Launch below the Duane Berentson bridge, one in La Conner under the Rainbow Bridge, and one at Washington Park in Anacortes.

Real Estate and Homes for Sale: There are various "Multiple listings services" for Skagit County or Whatcom County which list Samish Island homes and real estate for sale. The island is considered part of Bow, Washington for postal and other services. Trulia.com and Zillow.com also lists homes for sale in the area - type 98232 or Bow, WA in search field.

Animal Control: If you see farm animals wandering about the island, try contacting the owner first, if known. Perhaps a gate was left open by accident. If you don't know, or receive no response, report the animal(s) to 911, and once more to Emily Diaz of Animal Control, 360-428-3211.  This has been Animal Control's recommended procedure for Samish Islanders for the past several years, and includes horses, mules, donkeys, cattle, goats, sheep, swine, large birds, or any such animals. Washington State Law holds the owner responsible for any damage to other's property. 8/19/09

On-Island Services

Residents who provide services to island residents, may list their service or business in the Island Directory. This is done yearly, in January, by filling out your dues card and directory listing. Send your dues & form to SICC as directed on the form. This Feature now replaces the business page on the website.
